A protected guest-room duvet may need attention less often than one used nightly in a home with pets. Visible soiling, odour, a spill or a seasonal storage change can also move cleaning higher up the list.

Natural and synthetic fillings can have different care requirements. Read the label, inspect seams and note any damage before choosing a process. A large duvet also needs enough space to move and dry effectively.

Prepare for seasonal storage

A duvet should be fully clean and dry before it is stored in a breathable, dry place. Avoid compressing it while any residual moisture remains.
